Has it occurred to you that maybe people run GNOME on OSes other than
Linux? Your proposed ext3 metadata (which isn't going to happen;
Linus dislikes the idea) doesn't work for FreeBSD, or Solaris, or
HP/UX, or Irix, or AIX, or any of the other OSes that people use GNOME
on.
