getting desktop size

I've been thinking about this ... and the panel should (in the future) ... to
avoid wm docks and stuff, work only in a speicified rectangle ... so how
would I get this ... basically I think the wm should take all the windows
it's supposed to avoid and tell the clients about it ... I don't see why the
panel should track it all (or any other app that wants to know, such as gmc
could use it as well for icon placement) ...

of course this would be post 1.0 stuff ...
