This problem is addressed by both gnome-print and gnome-canvas in aa
mode.

You can rotate fonts (remove the if 0 on the test-gnome program to see
a demo of this) and if you stick to GnomePrint-provided fonts,
GnoemPrint will try to provide a close X font match for the font you
specified for printing.
