I don't understand what you are referring to...

You can put some data in the selection / X-clipboard, close the owner app,
and the paste the contents into another app.

Try xedit, write something, select it, close xedit, and paste it into xterm.
Or try it with two xterm's...

However, most gnome apps, appears to clear it's selection when they dies.
