gnome-core 1.1 / missing notes which versions are needed for complilation

The panel fails to compile on SuSE Linux 6.4:

I guess, I've to update other libraries first.  Please, add more
detailed info to the main README file and -- if possible -- try to
improve configure.in to catch such an error.
