I believe that it is generally thought a Good Thing (TM) to leave
autogenerated files (like configure, etc) in as it allows people without
autoconf/automake to compile the things. For example, I am converting an
acient library to the GNU build system at the moment and leave those
files in so that I can compile it on an ancient HP-UX.
