Gnome equivalent for gtk_init_check() ?

I'd like to move a GTK+ app I'm writting from GTK+ to Gnome, but I
can't find the equivalent of gtk_init_check () in Gnome.  In
particular I'd like gnome_init_with_popt_table_check ().  So if the
display is not set correctly I can fall back to curses.  Why does this
not exist?
