making gdk_draw_rgb_image draw on demand

I want to use gdk_draw_rgb_image to draw captured video frames, however
at present I can only get it
to work if I include it in and on area expose event handler
(http://eclipt.uni-klu.ac.at/manuals/gdk/gdkrgb.html
is the example)

Can anyone suggest how to make gdk_draw_rgb_image draw an image when
ever I want it to, without having
to resize or move the ap  to do it...??
