Panel applet renders incorrectly with crux theme

The sample panel applet in the tutorial
(http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/panel) doesn't render properly for me with
the Crux theme.  The background is drawn with garbage.  I've tried modifying
the style, but that didn't seem to do much.

When I compare it to applets like gen_clock(which work), I don't see any
drastic differences.  

Anyone have a clue they can give me?
