Problems with pkgconfig

Hi,
I am running configure and is running into the following error:
checking for db2html... false
checking for db2ps... false
checking for ps2pdf... true
checking for fig2dev... false
checking whether byte ordering is bigendian... no
checking for MMX-capable compiler... no
./configure: syntax error at line 6220: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES' unexpected

I am running Solaris 8 for Intel with the GNOME 1.4 packages from
Sun (which are placed under /opt/gnome-1.4). I have installed the latest
pkgconfig (0.8) from source placing it under /opt.

I also have the rest of the GNU tools which I got from sunfreeware.org
and which is placed under /usr/local,


I have also added the following to my environment in order to be able to
build.

PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin:/opt/gnome-1.4/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/opt/bin
export LOGNAME PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/lib:/opt/gnome-1.4/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /opt/gnome-1.4/share/aclocal"
export ACLOCAL_FLAGS

Any help with solving this is appreciated.
