GAL: e-table: adding columns

I'm playing with GAL's test-tree-1 example:

Is there any way to change the number of columns at run-time, instead of just
with the initial XML spec? Hopefully this doesn't involve building a whole new
XML specification for the table.

The columns_count virtual method doesn't seem to be called, at least in this
example.
