applications are ignorant when using other than default fonts

Hi

Problem: When setting a locale which uses other than default fonts, say
ISO 8859-2, gtk knows to use that font thanks to /etc/gtk/gtkrc.xx.
But other applications, which have the option to use custom fonts,
dont switch to ISO8859-2 (gedit, glimmer, ...)
What is the solution to this (besides going to every application and
change fonts) ?

* talk to every application's developer and solve this individually
* make a general solution (how?)
