Setting Background in 1.4

I have an applet that sets the background using X properties that worked
fine under GNOME 1.2 but now with 1.4 and Nautilus it dies whenever it tries
to write to the root window background.  Does anybody know a more GNOMEish
way to do this?

Basically the app draws/cycles through a playlist of backgrounds.
