Bug in defender code from Eric Harlow ?

Hi,

I'm trying to get the defender example from the book "Developing Linux
Applications with GTK+ and GDK" working, but it just doesn't do
anything. The window-contents are not moving, it doesn't respond to
keyboard input.

Has anyone ever got this one working on Redhat 7.2 ?
