Display Performance Problems

I noticed two performance problems in GNOME2.

1. Moving windows drags a little, i.e. the background uncovered is seen
to be redrawn, something that was not the case in GNOME 1.4
2. When I resize a window, say from gedit2, the content (scrollbars) is
very slow to follow. I thought, this problems was eliminated by using
double-buffering.

FYI, here is the configuration I use:

GARNOME 0.14
Metacity
Kernel 2.4.18
Pentium II 450 MHz
Matrox G400MAX
