This is a bug in the Gnome 1 version of gnome-vfs that was introduced when
changing it to use gnome-mime-data without thinking through the character
set issues. The data has to be in UTF-8 for Gnome 2, but there's no support
for dealing with such strings in Gnome 1. The bug report in bugzilla is
69899:
<http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69899>
That report discusses how this is going to be fixed. Please add any further
comments there.
