customizing the keycodes

hi all, while progrmming on custom keyboard i am
trying to change the physical-key-to-keysym mapping.
   From the hardware, keyboard is generating some xy
keycode  before doing any operation on that keycode i
need to map it to my required keysym. For example: if
"A" is pressed then effect need to be equivalent to
down-arrow key.In key-snopper callback i tried to 
change the keyval of GdkEventKey according to my
reqirement but dint work for all the keys. is there
any way to register physical-key-to-keysym translation
table or any idea about mapping. any idea about
this!.iam trying this on GtkFB and on DirectFB too.
