problem with gnome apps

Hi guys,

Just for testing purpose, i compiled gtk+-2.8 in
location /opt/src. And when i set:
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/src/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
and LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/src/lib

then gnome won't load properly, the menu entries will
be missing..the icons from many Gnome-2.10 apps will
be missing.Though, i can run the gnome apps from
terminal..but they will throw some runtime warning and
errors. So, i can't have two versions of GTK installed
or what? plz suggest a way..out.
