The patch did not work but I came to a similar conclusion as to what is
going wrong.  I am running off an AMD 2700+ with 512MB of ram.  What I
have noticed is that projects that fail only call read_output once where
as projects that work call read_ouput many times.  Perhaps something is
preventing io reads on the first pass?  I'm going to keep hacking at
it.  This bug has sparked my interest plus it is helping me learn some
of the advanced programming tecniques for GTK2.
