is a good place to start for basic information. I recommend the handbook
as fine reading!

There's a mailing list:
http://www.gnome.org/mailing-lists/index.shtml
has signup instructions for gnome-doc-list.

Then check out the doctable:
www.gnome.org/gdp/doctable/
for a list of apps that need documentation. If there's one there that
suits your fancy, send a note to the list to make sure no one else is
working on the object of your desire.
