Along with all the other suggestions, please use Yelp 2.6 or newer:
it will allow you to quickly look at the results of your work: just
call it with the your DocBook filename, eg.

    yelp mydoc.xml

I believe it's much more stimulating for starters when they can see
the fruits of their labor right away, and Yelp really does have nice
stylesheets :)
