Ye.  I'm having a brain-failure day today.  PNG transparency to black
would work properly.

There are still the other problems though (possibly missing bits of
information from around the edges of the screen, it looking weird).  In
fact, with PNG transparency, the border with drop shadow might look even
weirder.
