I think GIMP is a bad UI design example.
N number of floating windows. User spends most of the time
locating them, re-arranging them etc.
Has anybody checked out "Marking Menus" (Pie menus?) They are very popular in
Maya, a 3D modeling/animation program used by many top CG studios.

It is a gesture based menu. Its easy to learn and once learned, the
user can just drag the mouse along the "direction" and the command is
run.
It would be cool if its available as a widget in GNOME.
