PS- they are available now (and always have been available) to desktop
programmers. If you don't believe me, download mIRC 5.82 for Windows -
you'll see mIRC has an option for installing a MS Agent character (what is
referred to on this list as a MS Office character). I have come across
about 3 programs that use this technology. The reason why it isn't widely
used is due to the fact it can be a pain to program.
