Parallel install question

For proper parallel installable dev environments, is it sufficient to
move the headers for the GNOME 1.x version, or does the 1.x library
need to be renamed too? It strikes me that you'd need a symlink anyway
to preserve binary compat, so I'm not sure if it would help much
anyway.
