I first installed Gtk+/Gtkmm from deb package using apt-get, now if I
want to install Gtk+/Gtkmm from source, do I have to first remove the
previous package installation?
Not necessarily, you can install in a different prefix if you prefer. If
you don't, gtk+/gtkmm will overwrite the default installation -- not
sure if that's what you want.
No - by default, source will install into /usr/local instead of /usr and *not* overwrite package-managed files. Which is what you want (overwriting package-managed files is Bad (tm)).
By the way, gnome-hackers gnome org is not the proper place to ask this,
please use gtk-list gnome org in the future.
