Yes, please do file bug reports.
You're correct that the gcalctool source code is very old in certain
places, it's based on thirteen year old software...(*)
For most things that's actually considered a feature of gcalctool, since
its mathematic algorithms have had much testing, but of course the
interface and messages need some polishing. The author has also been
very responsive to such requests, in my experience(**).
