I actually hope to get a more realistic estimate of population that  
understands "American English" -- 500 million? More?

Oh, this will not be so easy to sort out -- Pedro Morais claims that  
there are more 175 million in Brazil alone, and yet ethnologue contains  
a much smaller number.

In these cases, I suggest rounding down and using "over ...".

Okay, I'll put this in (but I'll follow Abel's and Noah's advices, and  
put 40 million for traditional).

In light of his comments, I'm not quite sure what to put as a title:  
"speakers" is not suitable in that case, so does anyone have any better  
wording?

I was actually planning on putting word "speakers" only in the first  
language title (because of alphabetic ordering, that would be "American  
English"), and leaving it out from the others.
