If Gnome wants to make glyphs I've designed an official part of Vera,
that's absolutely fine by me!
I released them under a new name so that others could use them without
having to wait for a hypothetical new release of Vera.

Well, I can't speak for (e.g.) users of languages which use Cyrillic,
but I can imagine that having a consistent appearance over both Latin
and Cyrillic scripts might be desirable. Besides, Vera has a nice
aesthetic and if Cyrillic glyphs can be designed which also fall under
that aesthetic, then that's nice for users of Cyrillic scripts.
