Having separate subdirectories for the different branches is often the
easiest way to manage branches, yes.
I usually name the directories this way myself:
libbonobo (HEAD of libbonobo)
libbonobo-gnome-2-14 (the gnome-2-14 branch of libbonobo)
gedit (HEAD of gedit)
gedit-gnome-2-14 (the gnome-2-14 branch of gedit)
However, others may use different namings or structures that may suit
them better, for example by keeping all the HEAD in one directory and
the branches in a directory named after the branch, like this:
HEAD/libbonobo (HEAD of libbonobo)
HEAD/gedit (HEAD of gedit)
gnome-2-14/libbonobo (the gnome-2-14 branch of libbonobo)
gnome-2-14/gedit (the gnome-2-14 branch of gedit)
Whatever way suits you better, the important thing is that you can
keep track of the different branches used and can clearly distinguish
them from eachother.
