Might depend on your setup and distribution...
Is your version of cheese self-compiled, or the default one via your
distribution?
I'm asking because translating the latest git version and testing that
translation with an old version obviously will not use/display those
strings in the user interface that have been only recently added.
Here (for the language "xy") the file is located in
/usr/share/locale/xy/LC_MESSAGES/cheese.mo
