Re: [Tuxpaint-i18n] Call for translation updates

Rafaele,

In general, TuxPaint L10n is an off-line process directly into POT files or PO files from the TuxPaint site.   http://tuxpaint.org/help/po/

Sugar Labs is an unrelated project, of which I am Translation Team Coordinator, running a Pootle server.  TuxPaint and Sugar Labs have no formal connection, we are just FLOSS friends-with-benefits.  For example, Bill delayed the last release of TuxPaint so my Armenian team could finish before the release, all the way back in 2012, we hosted a local copy of the TuxPaint PO file for our Samoan team to complete and then we upstreamed it to the TuxPaint site.   Both projects have an strong interest in providing great software in as many languages as possible, and so from time to time, I collaborate informally with Bill Kendrick on a TuxPaint L10n sprint, sometimes one language at a time, and sometimes like now, as many as possible.

I respect the TuxPaint's team position that http://tuxpaint.org/help/po/ is the canonical home of TuxPaint L10n.  I will locally host new languages on my Pootle server and then upstream their work, typically removing the completed PO files from my Pootle instance afterwards to leave no confusion about where the canonical home of TuxPaint L10n really rexists.

Tell me what TuxPaint PO file you want in what language and I'll set it up on Sugar Labs Pootle until it's done and upstreamed.  Bill and I are conspiring to improve TuxPaint documentation i18n/L10n right now and we'll send another blast out if we find a good solution to make it easier for localizers.  The main thing I don't want to do is confuse localizers about where the canonical TuxPaint L10n site resides.

Does that make sense to you?

Chris,

I notice that many translations existent in the source code repository are not found in the Pootle instance..  E.g.: tuxpaint-stamps (in https://git.code.sf.net/p/tuxpaint/tuxpaint-stamps) have many almost complete translations, while in Sugar Labs' Pootle instance only 4 languages received translation.

IMHO it would be better to synchronize repository and Pootle translations before calling out for translation in the web platform.

Can you please check that?

Best regards,
Rafael Fontenelle

Dear Friends of FLOSS i18n/L10n,

I know this is off-topic for this list, but I assume many of you are also friends of TuxPaint L10n (or would be if you thought about it for a minute).  TuxPaint developer Bill Kendrick has announced he is "gearing up for" the first new release in three years in this very mature software and I think it should be seen as a golden opportunity for a L10n sprint to maximize the coverage in as many languages as possible.

If anyone wants a Pootle-hosted copy of tuxpaint.po, tuxpaint-stamps.po or tuxpaint-config.po PO files, let me know and I'll set it up on the Sugar Labs Pootle instance (downloading any partially complete files from the canonical site).

Otherwise follow Bill's directions below.

To: Tux Paint I18N <tuxpaint-i18n@lists.sourceforge.net>

I'm finally gearing up to release a new Tux Paint (0.9.23),
which admittedly won't have much in the way of new features
compared to 0.9.22 from three years ago.

That said, if you're out here and interested in updating
your translations (of any part of the project, or the website),
please do so!

  http://tuxpaint.org/help/po/

(The POT files are available via that page, as well)

If you've got a SourceForge account, and are familiar with Git,
you can now use it to commit your updates.  (We have moved away
from CVS, finally.)

For more info, start here:

Thanks in advance!
