I've tried with using only gettext.py from 2.3, and it all seems to
work fine.  Basically, you only need to set PYTHONPATH to point to
directory containing gettext.py 2.3 before any coming with Python 2.2.

You can find gettext.py which seems to work in
/home/users/danilo/xml2po.dist/gettext.py (taken straight from 2.3).
(I've put +x on /home/users/danilo, so you should be able to get
there, if not, just grab it elsewhere: I'll be removing it soon
anyway).
