The intellimouse drivers under MSWin do this too.

I actually feel the wheel is an excellent idea. Now that I've learned to use
it in Win, it bothers me when it doesn't work in X. Actually, it also
bothers me when it doesn't work in Microsoft's own Notepad :-)
