background-properties FAILS

background-properties always fails with:

        ** ERROR **: sigpipe caught
        and hangs, driving CPU way up
        until killed

Redhat, Glibc, egcs, Gnome release 0.26 (also eariler with CVS source)

Everything else works great. 
Any ideas?
