undefined refernces to zlib functions

I'm having a bit o trouble compiling anything that uses zlib.h. I get undefined references to <whatever that function is> eg. gzopen, compress.  And the -lz is on the gcc command line.  It fails in the xmhtml and the help-browser, so far I've just commeted them out but still I'm wondering what's up.
