Core dumps & problems

Can

somebody please explain how I can get
Gnome working without red core file all
over my drive and why from a clean
install of both RedHat and Gnome with
the
update I get: segmentation fault ( core
dumped ) when I try to run
Gnome-linxconf

As a new-be to Linux I'm having a hard
time getting some of these thing sorted.

I have tried putting the .fvwm2rc and
.fvwm2rc.gnome in the /root and also
put
.xinitrc in there with

panel &
background-properties --init &
keyboard-properties --init &
mouse-properties --init &
fvwm2 -f .fvwm2rc.gnome

they just get ignored and the win95
stuff pokes up it's ugly head

any sugestion of better window managers
eg Windowmaker etc that woyld be better
to run Gnome under and how I install it
would be choice

Cheers
Pete
