Well, in the more general font support case, as well as support for right-
to-left, would VFlib be of any use? According to the home page it supports:
Bitmap fonts used in X Window system
BDF, PCF.
Bitmap fonts used in TeX typesetting system
GF, PK, TFM, Virtual Font.
Vector fonts
TrueType, Type 1
Vector fonts for Japanese Kanji characters
Syotai-Kurabu, JG
Bitmap fonts for Chinese, Korean, Japanese characters
HBF
Or maybe GTK or the XFree86 people would be interested?
The home page is:

Incidentally, MagicPoint, which Miguel de Icaza used for his Gnome
presentation at USENIX, uses VFlib for font rasterizing.
