gmodule rantings

I've removed all occurences of glib.m4 and gtk.m4 in my aclocal dirs.
I've issued a make distclean on glib and gtk+.
I've rerun autogen.sh to generate all of the files.
When compiling testgtk, it complains about missing gmodule symbols.

What am I doing wrong ?

Also, I don't see the need for gmodule to be a separate lib. Why not merge
it with glib ?
