Same problem here. An strace reveals the following:
read(5, "root:UwI4fEK4EnwwM:0:0:root:/roo"..., 4096) = 1126
close(5) = 0
munmap(0x4007a000, 4096) = 0
mkdir("/tmp/root", 0700) = 0
time(NULL) = 904421943
socket(PF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM, 1) = 5
bind(5, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/tmp/root/orb-17183204651166857390"}, 36) = 0
listen(5, 5) = 0
socket(PF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM, 1) = 6
connect(6, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/tmp/root/orb-17183204651166857390"},
36
(sitting here, waiting...)
I'm hesitant to complain, however, as my problems yesterday did turn out
to be the result of not including the m4 files from /opt/gnome properly.
Woops; and there was much embarassment. Thanks to everyone who worked
with me to isolate that one.
