Panel stall

I know this has been answered before and I sincerel apologize for the
repetitive question, but I forgot to put this one into my question and
answer database.  When I start the panel it is just a solid color until I
kill the gen_util_applet.  Then everything works fine excpet you can't add
any applets to the panel.  Thanks for your time.
