Just an update on my GMC/MC problems.  I managed to catch the text that mc
flashes on the screen before it hangs.  It is:

subshell.c: couldn't get terminal settings: Inappropriate ioctl for device
ESC[1;0rESC[0;1HESC[mESC[39;49mESC[mESC[mESC[39;49m^MESC[KESC7ESC[?47hESC[1;0r
ESC[mESC[39;49mESC[1;0rESC[2JESC[HESC[?1001sESC[?1000h

Note, the ESC codes are as interpreted by less, and are not necessarily
accurate.  I had to view it through less or else it would mess up my rxvt
settings.  I have the same problem running it from an xterm, an Eterm or a
vt.
