When you use 'checkout -R' this takes some time until it's finished -
and it aborts if a network error occurs in the meantime; I had this
problem a few times.

Try checking out only the `e' module - if this doesn't work either - 
try the same without compression.

The `.new.xxx' is a temporary file created by CVS until the whole file
is there.
