Gnome and WM

How can I use windowmaker and gnome?  I have tried adding this to my
.xinitrc (which consisted only of exec wmaker):

background-properties --init &
keyboard-properties --init &
mouse-properties --init &
panel &
exec wmaker

But I don't get the gnome taskbar and get an error:

**Could not communicate with panel

I installed gnome from the RH5.1 CD.. and use wmaker 0.15.1...  The
installation file for gnome says to add these lines to the .xinitrc

background-properties --init &
keyboard-properties --init &
mouse-properties --init &
panel &
fvwm2 -force fvwm2rc.gnome

But I am not using fvwm2, and wmaker doesn't use an rc file...How can I
use them both (wmaker & gnome)?  Thanks....
