Using ~/.mc/ext

Are there any plans to make an external interface to ~/.mc/ext so that
programs other than [g]mc can use it?  The ability to launch a file
with the appropriate editor/viewer would be useful as a separate
library (maybe also including the vfs code), a corba component, or
even a command-line util (like w95's start.exe).  The last could be
fairly easy to implement as a command-line argument to mc (eg "mc
--open filename"), but would be less efficient than the other options.
