Easy problem from a newbe

Guys,

Just downloaded gnome-*-0.13, I have also made and installed GTK 0.99.8.

Now, when I come to make gnome-libs-0.13 I get the following error:

Can not find GTK 0.99.1

Do I need to set the LD_LIB path ?    If so what to  ?  Or is it   
something else ?


PS: I am new to GTK/Gnome.
