I don't know what's wrong in most of these cases (sounds like the
libraries and executables aren't from the same snapshot, maybe? Make sure
you have the latest everything), but this is on purpose. You don't want
your password to be visible while typing it. 

Of course, gsu is not secure and should not be used in a production
environment anyway. I took it out of the Makefile last night. 
 
If you have the latest everything and are still getting those errors, it's
bad, let us know.
