gtk test fail

I installed GTK-1.1.2 for tar without error.  But when I try to compile 
Imlib-1.8.1, it stops at GTK test.

gtk-config is in my PATH, and give me the right version (1.1.2).
Whe I try to do the test manually, it gives me:
Gdk-WARNING **: cannot open display

I removed all previous library and recompiled GTK 3 times... Any 
suggestions? PLEASE!!!
