gmc: error in loading shared libraries

I have gnome installed and running very well and nice except
for.............

I get this when attempting to load up gmc

gmc: error in loading shared libraries
/usr/lib/libgnomeui.so0: undefined symbol: gtk_type_check_object_cast

I installed a clean install of redhat 5.1 then installed all the updates
from ftp.redhat.com includiong the jpeg stuff
I went with a rpm based install just to see if it would work
I then installed everything form the redhat directory on ftp.gnome.org
including support  some of these I had to force and nodep to get em to
go
I then got that same error when running Electriceyes and gmc
so i went and got all of the stuff from the latest directory and
installed that all of that
that fixed the problem with ElectricEyes but the problem with gmc
remained.

any clues???
