Newbie Q: CVS modules and source tree structure?

I'm a newbie when it comes to CVS modules, and I haven't seen any info on
the relationship between modules and the source tree structure.  It seems
that the modules that "cvs checkout -c" displays shouldn't all be
retrieved at the top-level src directory.  How to find out what the src
tree should look like?
